10 STEPS TO SAVE $ MONEY

STEP 8: Make Offer On a New Car and Negotiate

DO NOT make an offer on a car until you have completed each of the previous steps. You now know what the dealer is asking and how much you want to pay.

If the lowest quote is close to the figure you calculated as your offer price, you probably don’t need to negotiate … you have already saved thousands of dollars.

If the lowest quote is significantly higher than the figure you calculated as your offer, you must decide whether you have the “stomach’ for negotiation … or not.

You can present your offer to the dealer who presented the lowest quote and hope that the dealer will accept your offer or lower the quote.

You can select the lowest quote and ask other dealers to better it.

Whatever you decide to do, your price is far better than one you would have gotten had you gone to the dealer.

DO NOT GO TO THE DEALERSHIP TO MAKE AN OFFER.  Negotiating from your home or office takes away the dealer’s ability to pressure you … or sell you something you don’t want or don’t understand.

Once you’ve agreed upon a price, prepare to finalize the transaction:

1. Call, fax or email the dealer to verify that the figures are correct and that there are no more ‘add-on’ charges, fees, etc.
2. Ask when the vehicle will be ready and make an appointment to test drive it and to sign the contract.
3. Prepare a packet according to the instructions in the Sign Contract / Pickup the Car section.
